Repair or Replace? Fridges, Washers and Dryers
A common rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half the price of a new comparable appliance and the unit is past mid-life, replacing often makes more sense.
- Fans, sensors, igniters, belts and elements are usually worth repairing on a unit that is not near the end of its life.
- A sealed-system repair (compressor or refrigerant) on an older fridge often is not.

FAQ
Should I repair a 12-year-old fridge?
It depends on the part. A fan or thermostat is often worth it; a sealed-system (compressor or refrigerant) repair on an older unit often is not.
