Dryer Not Heating? Causes and Fixes
A dryer that tumbles but stays cold usually has a power or fuel problem, a blown thermal fuse, or a failed heating part. Electric dryers need both halves of a 240-volt circuit to heat. Gas dryers depend on an igniter and gas valve coils. A clogged vent can cause the parts to overheat and fail.
Likely causes
- Half of the 240-volt breaker tripped (electric dryers can tumble without heating)
- Blown thermal fuse, often caused by a clogged vent
- Failed heating element (electric)
- Failed igniter or gas valve coils (gas)
- Faulty cycling or high-limit thermostat
- Gas supply valve turned off (gas)
Safe DIY checks
Safety first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before touching anything inside, and shut off the water or gas supply where it applies. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
- Reset the dryer's double breaker by switching it fully off and back on.
- Clean the lint screen and check the vent hose behind the dryer for crushing or lint packing.
- Go outside while it runs and feel for strong, warm airflow at the vent hood.
- On a gas dryer, check that the gas valve behind the dryer is open (handle in line with the pipe).
- Try a different heat setting. If only one setting fails, a thermostat or control may be the issue.
When to call a pro
- The breaker and vent are fine and it is still cold
- You smell burning, or the dryer gets very hot on the outside
- You have a gas dryer and the issue may involve the gas valve (leave gas work to a pro)
- The thermal fuse keeps blowing, which points to a vent or thermostat problem
What does it cost?
Call for a quote. Repair costs depend on the brand, the model, the part and the shop, so this site does not publish price ranges. Ask each shop for its diagnostic or trip fee and a written quote after diagnosis.
Repair or replace?
Thermal fuses, elements and igniters are usually affordable fixes, so repair often beats replacement. Clean the vent too, or the new part may fail again. Read the repair or replace guide.

FAQ
Why is my dryer running but not heating?
Most often a tripped half of the breaker, a blown thermal fuse, a bad heating element, or on gas dryers a failed igniter or gas valve coils.
Can a clogged vent stop the heat?
Yes. A clogged vent makes the dryer overheat, which can blow the thermal fuse and stop the heat. The U.S. Fire Administration also lists failure to clean dryers as a leading factor in dryer fires.
Can I repair a gas dryer myself?
Leave anything involving the gas supply to a qualified technician. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility.
