Freezer Works but Fridge Is Warm? Causes and Fixes
In most fridges, cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fridge section. When the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, that airflow has usually stopped. The most common reasons are a vent blocked by food, an evaporator fan that quit, or frost built up on the coils from a defrost problem.
Likely causes
- Food or containers blocking the air vent between the freezer and fridge
- Evaporator fan motor not running (you may hear no fan when the freezer door switch is pressed)
- Frost buildup on the evaporator coils from a failed defrost heater, thermostat, sensor or control board
- Damper (air door) stuck closed on models that have one
- Dirty condenser coils making the whole system work harder
Safe DIY checks
Safety first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before touching anything inside, and shut off the water or gas supply where it applies. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
- Check both temperature settings. Aim for about 37ยฐF in the fridge and 0ยฐF in the freezer (FDA guidance is 40ยฐF or below and 0ยฐF).
- Move food away from the vents on the back wall of the fridge and the freezer.
- Open the freezer and press the door switch. On most models you should hear or feel the fan inside. Silence can point to the fan.
- Look at the back wall of the freezer. Heavy frost or a solid ice sheet points to a defrost problem.
- Clean the condenser coils (under or behind the fridge) with a coil brush or vacuum, with the fridge unplugged.
- If frost is the issue, a manual defrost (unplug for 24 hours with doors open and towels down) can bring cooling back for a while. If it comes back, a defrost part has failed.
When to call a pro
- The fridge stays above 40ยฐF after you have done the checks above
- The frost keeps coming back after a manual defrost
- You hear clicking, buzzing or a fan that is noisy or not running
- Food safety is at risk and you need it cold today

Repair or replace?
Fans, defrost heaters and sensors are usually repair-worthy on a fridge that is not near the end of its life. If the sealed system (compressor or refrigerant) has failed on an older fridge, replacing it often makes more sense. See our repair or replace guide. Read the repair or replace guide.

FAQ
Why is my freezer cold but my fridge warm?
The fridge section usually gets its cold air from the freezer. A blocked vent, a stopped evaporator fan, or frost on the coils from a defrost problem stops that air from reaching the fridge.
Can I fix it myself?
Clearing vents, cleaning condenser coils and doing a manual defrost are safe DIY steps. Replacing fans, defrost parts or control boards is best left to a technician.
Is my food safe?
The FDA advises keeping the fridge at 40ยฐF or below. Use a fridge thermometer and move perishables to a cooler if the fridge rises above that.
